Hygiene services – your gum health

At the heart of everything we provide here at Burgess Hill Dental, is dental hygiene. We can’t build our fantastic tooth restorations on poor foundations!

A good daily dental hygiene routine will ensure your teeth and gums are rid of the daily build up of plaque whilst regular dental hygienist appointments remove the soft and hard plaque in those more difficult to reach places to prevent cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. Our fabulous hygienists Lucy, Clare and Louisa can reach all the places the common toothbrush may not.

At a hygienist visit our hygienists will assess or reassess your gum health to screen you for the different types of gum disease and talk about your home care routines and habits. They will remove any damaging hard plaque that is building up on your teeth and under your gums, using a variety of equipment including the air polishing Prophymate which fires a jet of air, water and sodium bicarbonate at your teeth to remove debris and polish the surface. We also have the very latest AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis Master  and Guided Biofilm Therapy available (see below). But perhaps most importantly they will work with you to hone your skills and find the right tools and techniques to help you remove the soft plaque from every surface of every tooth every day! This is actually more important than scaling and polishing and if you can follow their advice future hygiene appointments will be much less uncomfortable as your gum health improves.

Effective removal of the soft plaque from every surface of every tooth every day will

  • Keep your mouth healthier
  • Reduce your risk of future gum and tooth problems and treatments
  • And you will be keeping your whole body healthier too

For many patients, it is perhaps even more important to see our hygienist regularly than it is to see their dentist regularly. Our hygienists’ focus is on keeping you healthy, while our dentists spend significant time repairing the damage that sometimes happens when you let health slip. Our dentists believe that a lot of the treatment they provide is totally preventable. Regular appointments with your hygienist will help keep you healthy, help prevent the need for dental treatment and the costs associated with that treatment!

Our Recommended daily hygiene routine

  • Daily flossing/ using tape/tepes/ icons/flossettes or other interdental aids helps to remove soft plaque in between your teeth.
  • Brush your mouth morning and night, concentrating on all surfaces and areas of your teeth and gums using an electric toothbrush for maximum cleaning effect (Phillips Sonicare- vibrating or Oral B- oscillating technologies) 2 minutes, not 20 seconds, please. Use the timer!
  • We definitely recommend a tongue scraper to remove any debris on your tongue. Really important for fresh breath.
  • Some patients can benefit from a good mouthwash after brushing. We recommend Ultradex and Listerine for regular use and Corsodyl if you have a specific short term gum problem.
  • To make sure your teeth are protected from cavities at the end of your routine, brush a pea sized blob of fluoride toothpaste quickly around all the surfaces of your teeth and leave it there. Spit if you need to but don’t rinse. This will help protect your enamel from acid and sugar attack.

You can buy all of the oral hygiene products you need and we recommend at our shop at reception. Our products are very competitively priced but we cannot guarantee they will always match every supermarket or online offer! If we see any really outstanding offers from Amazon. etc we will always alert you to these on our Facebook page.

We stock some really useful and exceptional value oral care kits from the Ultradex range which include anything you might need for your oral health care and also whitening maintenance kits (very effective following tooth whitening treatment). The UltraDEX range helps bridge the gap between professional and at home dental care providing a superior level of cleaning and protection. They are neutral in taste, contain no alcohol and are suitable for vegetarians.

The active ingredients Chlorine Dioxide (Cl02) and Fluoride are very important in combatting gum disease, tooth decay, maintaining fresh breath and gently whitening teeth. Suitable for daily long term use, there are no unpleasant side effects such as staining. Ultradex products are also extremely successful in the treatment of bad breath. Bad breath is a very embarrassing and difficult complaint. We have found UltraDEX mouthwash and toothpaste, combined with tongue scraping, works on people who have tried everything else.

Introducing Airflow and Guided Biofilm Therapy

We are delighted to tell you we have recently invested in the very latest technology, the AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis Master, to help you get the best outcomes in the treatment and management of gum (periodontal) disease. The Swiss Made AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis Master was developed in the EMS Research Centre with more than 100,000 hours of technical and clinical testing in collaboration with leading dental professionals from all over the world. It has been designed with the highest standards of performance, safety and comfort in mind.

What is Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)?

GBT is a systematic, predictable solution for dental biofilm (dental plaque) management in professional prophylaxis using AIRFLOW, PERIOFLOW and PIEZON technologies. It is a minimally invasive technique to manage dental plaque, meaning less use of abrasive and sometimes sensitive instruments and equipment, which results in a better outcome regarding plaque levels in the mouth. AIRFLOW® is a revolutionary, non-contact form of dental maintenance and prevention. It projects a controlled stream of air, warm water and very fine pleasant tasting powder onto the tooth and in hard-to-reach areas to dislodge and remove food particles, plaque, discolouration and stains.

The high pressure water/air stream cleans your teeth much faster, efficiently and comfortably than the use of traditional pastes.

Since the water in the AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis Master heats to 40 degrees, it’s a positively warm experience!

What is dental biofilm?

It is estimated that 1mm of dental plaque contains more than 200 million bacteria. If left untreated, the bacteria can spread and develop biofilm. A biofilm comprises any group of microorganisms, which stick to each other and then to a surface. In the mouth the biofilm is dental plaque. Biofilm is a colony of bacteria that can cause gum disease and compromise your body’s immune defences, increasing the risk of systemic diseases, such as cardiovascular and respiratory disease, arthritis or diabetes.

Many patients understand that plaque contains the bacteria, which is damaging to both gums and teeth.

However, not everyone is aware that plaque changes over time; immature plaque is far less damaging than plaque that has been left on gum tissue and teeth for an extended period.

The aim of GBT

Dental plaque is damaging for gums and teeth, it causes both gum disease and dental decay. GBT aims to both REDUCE the AMOUNT and stop the REGROWTH of dental biofilm. AIRFLOW PLUS POWDER prevents biofilm forming as rapidly in the mouth. It contains Erythitol powder. It acts underneath gum tissue, around dental implants, bridges and orthodontic appliances, by clearing the plaque in these areas and then slowing down the regrowth. Most patients worry that hygiene sessions will cause pain and sensitivity, and unfortunately ultrasonic cleaners and hand scaling can sometimes be painful. The aim of GBT is to provide more effective biofilm management using a pain-free technique. AIRFLOW and PERIOFLOW use jets of water that are pre-warmed to body temperature. The powder is contained within the water and uses kinetic energy to remove plaque. Once it is then clean the remaining powder acts as a gentle antibacterial to slow down the production of plaque, which is completely safe for use in both adults and children.

How is Airflow used?

When using the AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis Master device, our hygienists Clare, Lucy and Louisa will place a coloured dye (disclosing solution) onto your teeth to reveal any plaque and biofilm present in your mouth. This can be a great motivational tool to show you the areas in your mouth that you need to spend a little more time cleaning at home. The jet of water is then used to remove the biofilm. It is non-abrasive to hard tissue and can also be used on the tongue, cheeks and gums. It is the best solution for orthodontic appliances, dental appliances, bridges, crowns, veneers and implants (it can minimize the risk of periimplantitis and to reduce the loss of implants) If you have hard calcified plaque (calculus/tartar) your hygienist may also need to use a PIEZON® ultrasonic on your teeth. However, the use of AIRFLOW® initially minimises the amount of time in which an ultrasonic is needed.

Are there other benefits of using Airflow and Perio flow?

Due to the nature of the powder, AIRFLOW and PERIOFLOW are also excellent at stain removal – better than conventional polishing. Most patients do not require their teeth to be polished following the use of this system, and most report their teeth feeling smoother and remaining smoother for longer.

Read what what our patients are saying!

Review: “After retiring from a long career as a health professional I may be more or less immune to “new device hype”. Some would go so far as to say that 50 years’ experience has moved healthy professional scepticism firmly into cynicism, even satire! Today my inner cynic was silenced! I’d read about the “New Airflow Technology” in a leaflet in the practice. I had well-founded doubts! Visits to the hygienist have been a challenge for me (& the hygienist!) for years – “sensitivity” has led to visits being spread over two appointments, half my face being anaesthetised one week, the other half the next, this being the only way anyone could use ultrasonic (or other cooled devices) anywhere in my mouth. Today we gave Airflow a try. Blue dicloser was painlessly applied, my teeth were thoroughly cleaned, every hint of blue-labelled plaque removed. Painlessly! Without anaesthetic! Indeed, the treatment became ever more comfortable as the water used was warmed to close to blood heat. For the first time in a whole lifetime of enthusiasm (& disappointment) for new health techniques I find I am recommending a therapy without reservation, qualification or any, “… if only …” additions! If, like me, visits to the hygienist have been challenging to both parties I can promise you that Airflow delivers all its leaflet promises. It has not changed my life. But it has without doubt changed my dental experience beyond measure! Thank you Burgess Hill Dental – always investing in good kit, always delivering excellent care by lovely people!”
