Treatment steps to a healthy smile

1

Oral hygiene assessment

To begin your hygiene appointment, we ask you a little about your teeth brushing routine at home and do a full assessment of your gum health. We also ask if you have any concerns regarding your dental health or if there are any areas we should focus on.

Bespoke treatment

We give you individual advice as to how you can improve your gum health with better oral hygiene techniques. Improving gum health is totally dependent on your own efforts. We give your teeth a thorough clean, removing stubborn plaque and tartar from hard-to-reach places on your teeth or under your gums.
Alongside the traditional scaling, we also offer innovative Airflow treatment, which beautifully cleans away plaque in a minimally invasive and completely pain-free way.

A fresher, brighter smile

We give your teeth a professional polish, leaving them feeling incredibly smooth and clean. They may even look whiter once the plaque deposits have been cleaned away!

Why are hygiene visits important?

Your overall dental health depends on keeping up a good level of oral hygiene, protecting your teeth and gums from harmful plaque and bacteria. While your teeth cleaning routine at home does a lot of the work towards keeping your mouth healthy, a visit to one of our excellent hygienists at Burgess Hill Dental takes it further. A professional clean removes plaque (biofilm) from difficult to reach areas and tartar build ups, protecting your oral health.

A visit to your hygienist also enables us to keep an eye on your gum health, looking for signs of gum disease. We are experts at spotting gum disease in the very early stages, enabling us to catch and treat it before it has the chance to worsen. The symptoms of this can often be overlooked, and, without regular hygiene appointments, you may only realise it is an issue when it has already caused damage to your gums and teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need to see the hygienist?

Most patients book to see the hygienist every six months, to tie in with their regular dental check up appointments. However, we may advise you to leave a longer or shorter time between your visits. At the end of each of your hygiene appointments, we review your oral health progress and advise you when you should return for more treatment.

How long does a dental hygiene appointment last?

Your dental hygiene appointment will last around 30-40 minutes on average. This can vary depending on the condition of your teeth and gums and how thoroughly your teeth need to be cleaned. We leave ample time so you will never feel rushed.

Does dental hygiene treatment hurt?

Dental hygiene treatment can be uncomfortable, particularly if you have a traditional scale and polish treatment. If you are concerned about this, please let us know. We can help you feel relaxed and ready before starting, and are happy to stop to give you a break if you need it. We also offer Airflow treatment, which gives exceptional results in a more comfortable way.

What is Airflow treatment?

Airflow treatment has transformed dental hygiene care, giving a completely minimally invasive and pain-free way to clean plaque from your teeth. Airflow uses a controlled jet of warm water, air, and fine bicarbonate particles to provide a thorough and comprehensive yet gentle clean. The spray technology ensures all areas can be accessed and treated evenly and effectively, leaving you with brilliantly brighter and healthier teeth.

Can I request Airflow treatment?

Yes, if you are interested in having Airflow treatment during your hygiene appointment, please let us know. We can use this to give your teeth a thorough and professional clean in a comfortable and innovative way.

What is gum disease?

If plaque is allowed to build up in your mouth and is not thoroughly cleaned away, it can cause your gums to become irritated and inflamed, often bleeding when you brush them. This is one of the first signs of the early stage of gum disease, known as gingivitis. Other symptoms include swollen and red gums, sensitivity, and bad breath. If gingivitis is left untreated, it can cause your gums to recede, forming pockets between your gum and tooth. Plaque and tartar build up on the tooth root, which is much harder to remove. This stage is called periodontitis and needs more extensive and specialist treatment to manage.

Can gum disease be reversed?

If gum disease is caught in the early stages, it can be reversed with tailored hygiene care. We can carefully and thoroughly remove the stubborn plaque and tartar, which causes your gum to heal. However, if gum disease has progressed to periodontitis, this is a more severe stage. We can manage periodontitis with careful hygiene treatment and encouraging your own excellent cleaning regime.

Can the hygienist whiten my teeth?

Hygiene treatment is not designed to whiten your teeth, although you may find they appear much brighter once stubborn build-ups of plaque and tartar have been cleaned away. If you are interested in changing the colour of your teeth, please talk to us about our teeth whitening treatment options.
