Treatment steps to a whiter smile

Consultation and planning

At your initial whitening consultation, we make sure your teeth and gums are healthy and can be whitened. We then take a 3D scan of your mouth, which is used to make your comfortable whitening trays, and show you how to use them with the Boutique whitening gel.

Whitening at home

With Boutique specialist whitening, you can whiten your teeth in your own home, fitting treatment into your busy lifestyle. Wear your trays overnight, or for 3-4 hours in the day, to achieve incredible results. We can also offer 1 hour day time whitening, although this will require more applications to achieve the same result.

After two weeks, you can show off your results! We make sure you are delighted with your new look and show you how much it has changed from your initial shade. Top up gel is available for you to maintain your newly white teeth.

What is tooth whitening?

Tooth whitening is one of the easiest and quickest ways to enhance the appearance of your teeth, lifting stains and making them brighter, whiter and appear healthier. Over time, teeth can become stained and discoloured, especially if you smoke or drink a lot of tea or coffee, which can knock your confidence. Safe and effective whitening treatment can bring back your sparkle in just a short course of treatment.

At Burgess Hill Dental, we use Boutique whitening, a tried and trusted professional system which is only available from your dentist. It allows you to whiten your teeth on your schedule, fitting in with your lifestyle and daily routines. The specially formulated gel gets to work on removing discolouration from the very start, and we guarantee you will achieve a brighter, whiter smile, provided you do your part and complete the prescribed treatment! Typically your teeth will whiten by 8 shades. Your dentist can show you what this would mean for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is teeth whitening safe?

If it is carried out and supervised by a dental professional, teeth whitening is perfectly safe, and will not damage your teeth. You should avoid whitening kits that can be bought online, or in beauty salons. Although they are inexpensive, these kits are unregulated and normally contain an acid rinse, which can thin down the tooth enamel and cause significant and irreversible damage. They can also cause chemical burns to your lips and gums.

How long does teeth whitening take?

Teeth whitening treatment takes place over the course of 2-3 weeks, as you wear the custom made trays and specially formulated gel at home. If you wear your trays for at least 3-4 hours during the day, or overnight while you sleep, for 14 consecutive days, you will ensure you get the fastest results. If your teeth are particularly discoloured or dark, or you want to achieve a significant amount of whitening, your treatment may take longer. We are happy to advise you on this at your initial consultation.

Are there any side effects from whitening your teeth?

The main side effect that you could experience from whitening treatment is an increase in sensitivity in your teeth. This sensitivity always goes away 1-3 days after you complete treatment, and you can take a break from your whitening midway through if you need to, to give your teeth a rest. This will have no effects on your treatment, it will just take a little longer to achieve the best results. We have lots of tips and advice for helping with sensitivity, and even have a milder whitening gel available, designed for people who tend to be prone to sensitive teeth.

How white will my teeth get after whitening treatment?

You are able to choose how white you would like your teeth to become, and we are happy to advise how you will be able to achieve this. Some teeth require a little more effort to get them to change colour, and we may suggest a stronger whitening gel or to continue the whitening process for a little longer to ensure fantastic results.

How long will my tooth whitening results last?

You can expect your tooth whitening results to last a long time as the effects are permanent. However, certain lifestyle choices, including smoking or drinking lots of tea, coffee and red wine etc, may cause your teeth to become stained again over time. You can maintain your results by using top-up tubes of whitening gel and your original whitening trays once a month.

Will my crowns and fillings get whiter too?

Existing dental restorations, including crowns and fillings, are not affected by whitening treatment, and will not change colour. If they look out of place after your teeth have been whitening, you may choose to replace them, at an additional cost. Your dentist will be able to advise whether this will cause an aesthetic problem for you during your first appointment.
