Why do I have toothache?

There are many reasons for toothache and pain, and all have varying degrees of discomfort. These include cracked teeth, sensitivity, gum infections, tooth decay and lost fillings. In some cases, trauma to your tooth due to an injury or accident can cause pain, or pain may come on suddenly within your tooth.

Symptoms of toothache can include persistent or intermittent pain, swelling in the affected area, headaches or a fever. You may feel a sharp pain when you eat or drink or a constant throbbing pain in your tooth or jaw.

What can be done to help?

If you have a toothache that has lasted for more than two days, it is important to contact us as soon as possible so we can help. While you are waiting for your appointment, you can take painkillers, as directed, to ease the pain. Don’t suffer with toothache – get in touch for bespoke treatment and advice.

We will assess your condition, focusing on the affected area in your mouth, to determine the cause for your toothache and the treatment you need. In severe cases, it is likely that the only options to treat the pain in your tooth will be root canal treatment or extraction. We explain every stage of treatment with you, including time frames and costs, so you remain well-informed about your care.
