Staining/Airflow

At Burgess Hill Dental we strive to provide the highest quality state-of-the-art techniques and technology. We recently introduced the AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis Master to help you get the best outcomes in the treatment and management of gum (periodontal) disease.

What is Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)?

Airflow GBT projects a controlled stream of air, warm water and very fine, pleasant tasting powder onto the teeth to dislodge and remove plaque, discolouration and stains. The high pressure water/air stream cleans your teeth much faster and more efficiently than traditional hygienist methods, especially as it uses water that is heated to body temperature.

Plaque (biofilm) is first coloured with a ‘disclosing’ solution and this guides us to know where to clean with the Airflow to remove the bacteria that have built up on the teeth.

Pain-free hygiene care

Airflow uses a fine stream of particles that can be directed very precisely onto the surface of the teeth. This is highly effective at removing stains, which are often located in very fine grooves on the teeth, that are otherwise difficult to clean.

The procedure is more comfortable and much gentler than a traditional scale and polish treatment, which can cause sensitivity in some patients. It is quick and straightforward and leaves you with brilliantly brighter and healthier-looking teeth in just one visit to the practice.

What are the benefits of airflow polishing?

  • Gentle yet very effective treatment for deep stains
  • Comfortable treatment and suitable for patients with sensitive teeth
  • Minimally invasive
  • Easier and more comfortable than a scale and polish treatment
  • Removes plaque build up to help prevent gum disease
  • Leaves you with a brighter and healthier smile
  • Can be used as a quick solution for special occasions such as weddings
  • Suitable for most patients

Perioflow

In addition to Airflow, which is used to clean the visible surface of the tooth, we can provide Perioflow.

This is used following the deep cleaning of root surfaces, in cases of periodontal (gum) disease, to polish the root surface.

Using Perioflow helps to provide a great environment for gums to heal following the root cleaning with hand and ultrasonic instruments.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long after Airflow treatment can I eat something?

After an Airflow treatment you should wait around at least 30 minutes before eating something. This allows the flurried treatment to work its magic and do its job and prevents your teeth from staining. If you want to prolong your Airflow results, it’s advisable to limit your intake of teeth staining drinks and food or brush your teeth after consuming them.

What should I avoid after Airflow?

You don’t need to avoid anything after treatment. However, you could refrain from smoking immediately after and restrict food and drinks known to stain teeth for a little while.

How effective is Airflow teeth cleaning?

Airflow is highly effective at cleaning teeth. Studies have shown that air polishing is approximately three times faster at removing plaque and staining than usual hygiene treatments. Teeth are also cleaned in a less abrasive manner than a scale and polish.

How often should you have Airflow treatment?

How often you have treatment depends on the individual circumstances and how susceptible you are to gum disease. For most patients, every 6 months is recommended.

How long does Airflow treatment last?

The Airflow procedure combined with a standard hygienist visit lasts approximately 30 minutes. A fine jet of compressed air, water and fine particles are used to remove stains on the teeth.
